Happy Fall

Recently, my family and I went on a fall hike.  One of the photos resembled a photo I took of Monet at a similar age.  Monet is 8 months in the photo on the left and Jude is 10 months in the photo on the right.  Where has time gone?  My babies are growing up.  I feel like I closed my eyes just once to blink, and now they are both so big.

I hope you and your family are enjoying this beautiful fall as much as we are!  Cherish it, because soon it will be gone.

Handmade Gifts for our Little June-Bug

county fair birthday invitation Handmade gifts are a part of the family traditions Josh and I are building.  Ever since we have dated, handmade gifts have always been something we have made for each other.  And now that our family has grown, handmade gifts continue to be a theme in our holiday and birthday celebrations.

Monet turns two in about a week, and Josh and I are spending our spare time getting ready for her County Fair themed birthday party, along with finishing up the handmade gifts we have made for her.

This year, for Monet’s birthday, I made her an interactive photo album of her birth.  Since I’m currently pregnant, and the baby’s ultrasound is scheduled for the day before Monet’s birthday, I wanted to take this birthday as an opportunity to talk to her about her birth.  Do you remember the Moda Bake Shop feature I had a few months back, where I wrote a tutorial on how to make a Fabric Photo Album?  Well that’s the book I used for Monet’s gift.  Here are a few pictures of the book:

The book is filled with photos and memorabilia that Monet can touch and play with.

The book also has slots for scrapbook pages and the last page of the book is one big vinyl envelop filled with cards, letters, and other precious items that Monet can pull out and look at.  Each piece tells a story.

Josh finished making Monet a play kitchen for her bedroom.  Can you believe how cute this is?  Here are a few photos:

Oh, and did I ever show you the bike that Josh made for Monet a while back?  Here are a few photos:

Loving Play

Monet is getting to the age where she LOVES play and pretend.  I know what you’re thinking, what child doesn’t like play?  I don’t know why, but just recently this has really developed strongly in her.  She’s a bundle of energy, jumping from one activity to the next, using her imagination, and her creative side to play.  I love it!  Lately she has loved coloring, playdoh, and playing with fabric and buttons in my studio.

I wonder if she will be an artist like me and my husband, or if she is just playing pretend.

This week’s moment, came the other night before bed time, when the three of us were playing with playdoh.

Actually, make that, as the four of us were playing with playdoh 😉

As we acted silly, and played pretend, the house filled with laughter and smiles.  I can see why Monet loves this so much.  I think maybe this love for play, is really developing strongly in my husband and I as well.

Because people, smiles and laughter, more than anything else, is truly what makes a house a home, I hope you enjoyed this weeks “moment”…

A Handmade Holiday Fabric Photo Book

A Handmade Holiday Fabric Photo Book sewnEvery Christmas my husband and I give each other a handmade gift.  This year, I made Josh and Monet a photo book by basically sewing photos onto felt along with other memorable items like old letters, ribbon, keys, and rings.

What do you think?

Did you ever see the accordion style book that Josh made for me last year?  If you haven’t you must, it’s amazing!  One of the nicest things he has ever made for me.

And while I’m happy with how the book I made turned out, I fear it doesn’t even compare to the book he made for me.   That’s how it goes when you’re married to an artist. It’s the thought that counts –right!?

I hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas and blessings for the New Year!

Charley Harper Quilt, Safely Back Home

The Charley Harper quilt I made for Monet is safely back home, after hanging in a local quilt shop for the past 6 months.  As the air turned cold here in Utah, I knew it was time for the quilt to come home; I wanted it to be used for what it was intended to do.

Now that Monet is older, it’s neat to see her interact with the images on the quilt.

Eight Days a Week

Monet loves music, dance, and pretty much acting like a ham all hours of the day.  Yesterday, we were listening to the Beatles while making blueberry muffins.  “Eight Days a Week” came on and it fit so perfectly with how I was feeling at that exact moment.  And because I can’t seem to put my camera away these days, since Monet is just that cute, my “one moment” for this week is actually eight — eight photos from each day of this eight day week, in descending order.

I ain’t got nothing but love, babe

One thing I can say, girl

Embracing Fall

I hate winter.  And while fall on its own is generally a nice season, in my eyes Fall is like Winter’s best friend.  You might not mind Fall, you might even like Fall, but since Winter tags along behind Fall, well, it kind of makes Fall a bit of a downer when he arrives at a party.  Does that make any sense?

Winter brings the cold, the dark, the end to long walks, long days, and playing in the garden.  All joking aside, I struggle during the winter months.  When the leaves start to change colors, it remind me that winter is on its way, and frankly I don’t look forward to that one bit.

This year, I’m trying to be different.  I’m trying to embrace fall and the beauty that comes along with it.  And while I might not succeed everyday, one day this week, when Monet and I were walking, I genuinely enjoyed the brisk air, the rustic colors, the dying plants, and my daughter’s fascination with all the changes around her.

Thank you Monet, for helping me to see something so beautiful, so obvious –thank you for helping me to embrace fall.

She had me before hello…

I know I write about my daughter Monet every OM, but truly I am absolutely smitten with her.

It doesn’t matter that she gets up most mornings at 6 a.m.  It doesn’t matter that she often feeds the dog 1/2 her meals causing him to get sick.  It doesn’t matter that she grabs at my coffee in the morning and causes me to dump it all over my white bed sheets.

Everyday, all day, my entire heart is hers.

Last year, I hated not being home with Monet.  Dropping her off at the sitters was a daily struggle.  But now that I’ve quit my day job, everyday at home with her is truly a gift.

Monet learned a new word this week –“Happy”.  She walks around the house saying it over and over again, “happy, happy, happy”.  It’s nice knowing that what I feel inside, well, I think she feels it too.

Because people, smiles and laughter, more than anything else, is truly what makes a house a home, I hope you enjoyed this weeks “moment”…

Baby Steps

When I was away last weekend, attending The Creative Connections Conference, I was sure my daughter Monet was going to take her first steps, just to spite me for leaving her for three nights and four days.

I’m happy to report that just the opposite happened.  I arrived back home on Saturday evening, and the very next day Monet took her first steps.  What a sweet homecoming!

You can view a video on my family blog if you’re interested.

(Note: The video is both sweet and terribly cheesy.  Consider yourself warned.)
